LCL (Less than Container Load Shipment)
LCL refers to a shipment that doesn't fill one 20 or 40ft standard container. The container is therefore filled with cargo from multiple consignees. On arrival at the destination port the goods are de-consolidated (separated) at a container freight station (CFS). LCL costs more to ship per unit of freight than FCL but may be the cheaper option for small shipments.
FCL (Full Container Load Shipment)
FCL refers to one 20 or 40ft container filled with cargo, and is the standard set by the ISO (International Organisation for Standardisation).

Normally import VAT is charged at 20% and is applied according to the classification of the goods.
At KTL we have a dedicated Custom Clearance team who can work out the total amount of import VAT and duty due. This is either paid directly to HMRC or you can pay us and we will forward it on for you.
A commodity code is a universal classification system of goods. Commonly, when you purchase goods from an overseas company, they will provide you with the commodity code(s). You can look up codes and check UK VAT & duty rates here: https://www.gov.uk/trade-tariff.
