There is a national shortage of HGV drivers that is now affecting us in the South.

There is a national shortage of HGV drivers which we are starting to feel in the South of England. The Road Haulage Association estimates that nationally around 100,000 drivers are needed. An estimated 15,000 have left the UK post Brexit and it is reported that 30,000 learners are awaiting their tests. There is a fear that it is going to get worse before it gets better.

At KTL Europe we are urging our customers to get your deliveries scheduled as early as possible especially during the busy periods. With the Covid-19 pandemic seeing an increase in customers ordering online the demand for drivers is at a peak. This has all not been helped with the current post Brexit and start if the ‘pingdemic’ where drivers are being notified of being in contact with someone who has tested positive.

The Government has written to the logistics sector telling them it knows the challenges are serious and measures are being put in place. An improvement needs to be seen especially with the lead up to Christmas around the corner.
