Shipping lines have issued a penalty of $15000 for any cargo mis-declared as non hazardous to China
We are grateful for our partner in China for letting us know about this latest information for the mis-declaration of Hazardous/Dangerous goods to China.
In recent years it has been a rising trend for shippers to mis-declare dangerous/hazardous goods as non hazardous/non dangerous.
The result of this can be catastrophic as per recent explosions onboard container vessels in Hong Kong, Xiamen and Thailand.
The below is the information we have today received:
In the overall interest of safe operation onboard, please note that for mis-declaration of hazardous cargoes
prior to shipment, Hapag-Lloyd will implement a penalty of USD 15,000.00 per container, effective as from
September 15, 2019.
Failure to properly offer and declare hazardous cargoes prior to shipment is a violation of the Hazardous
Material Regulations. Such violations may be subject to monetary fines and/or criminal prosecution under
applicable law.
To ensure the safety of our crew, ships and other cargo onboard, Hapag-Lloyd holds the Shipper liable and
responsible for all costs and consequences related to violations, fines, damages, incidents, claims and corrective
measures resulting from cases of undeclared or misdeclared cargoes.
Further to above announcement from Hapag Lloyd, we already got notices from most carriers regarding the penalty for
Mis-declaration/non declaration DG cargos. The penalty will be USD 15,000 per container.
